Career Story of Adam Buksa

Major League Soccer is generally regarded by European players as a fine place to end a career, but it’s relatively rare for top young talent to consider a move across the ocean. That’s why the career path of Polish-born attacker Adam Buksa is so interesting and could perhaps change the broadly accepted narrative about the MLS. He is currently playing for New England Revolution after showing a lot of promise in his native Poland, becoming a reliable goal scorer, and even briefly reaching the ranks of senior national team.

1. Adam Buksa in Polish League

Buksa started his professional career at age 18, playing for Lechia Gdansk for two years before signing with Zagliebe Lubin. He reached his full potential with Pogon Szczecin, where he appeared in 50+ matches and scored more than 20 goals in the top Polish football division between 2018 and 2019. After first joining the club on a loan, he quickly became one of Pogon’s key players and top goal scorers. He also appeared in youth national team from 2013 to 2015, proving that he belongs among the elite players of his generation. He is a tall and physical center forward, but he suffered some injuries early in his career that slowed down his progress.

2. Adam Buksa and transfer to MLS

His exploits in the Polish Ekstraklasa league were sufficient to draw the attention of New England Revolution, who paid a staggering $4.5 million transfer fee to secure Buksa’s services for the 2020 season. Interestingly, Buksa chose to join the MLS side rather than one of the more prestigious European clubs, despite having offers from Italy and England. In New England, he joins a talented team that also includes highly paid players such as Gustavo Bou and Carles Gill, so he will have every opportunity to succeed but will also face high expectations.

Buksa didn’t waste any time making an impression with his new club, scoring his first goal in only his second MLS game in the home opener in March. Unfortunately, the season was interrupted by the COVID-19 outbreak and was only recently resumed. So far, Buksa appeared in all games and scored a total of two goals, with his team currently sitting in the fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Judging by his European career and his goal scoring ability, he has a chance to make a name for himself in the league that craves big stars and continues to gain popularity both in the US and worldwide.

3. Adam Buksa - Future

In just two years, Buksa has gone from a virtual unknown struggling to get playing time in the Polish league to one of the most exciting players on a big-city team in the United States. This may not be a conventional career arch for a young striker with big potential, but Buksa is making a bold bet that he could stand out even more in the MLS than in the high-profile European competitions. If he proves to be right and uses his American experience to become a better player, his example could open the floodgates and make it much easier for MLS teams to recruit in Europe.
